Château Montrose--Vintage 1970
Saint-Estèphe, 2me cru classé
Some capsules corroded. Bin-soiled, scuffed and damaged labels, some very stained, some loose and some missing. Lots 131 and 132 levels base of neck. Lots 133 to 136 levels top-shoulder. Lot 137 levels: five base of neck and seven top-shoulder. Lots 138 and 139 levels upper-shoulder. Lots 140 and 141 levels mid/upper-shoulder
Tasting Note: The sort of vintage to suit Montrose. Rather like La Mission, intensely deep and packed with fruit and tannin. 'Magnificent but too heavy for (a City) lunch' in 1980!. Massive, Latour-like, rich, mouthfilling but tough. Five recent notes: exciting, rich, glorious flavour but still very tannic. 'Good but not great' a jeroboam in 1997. High toned, raw tannic finish. Last tasted at a Bordeaux Club dinner in June 1998 **(**)M.B.
