Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1847
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Believed original cork and heavy lead capsule. No evidence of cork shrinkage. Irregular shaped, traditional Bordeaux shaped bottle. Plain parchment label bin-soiled and slightly faded with minor damage to edges. Level mid/upper-shoulder. Attractive dark amber colour. Purchased by the current owner from a leading London merchant in the early 1990's and stored since in a professional storage facility
Tasting Note: Picking commenced 25 September. Tasted on eight occasions. Three times in April and once in September 1986, all amazingly good, wines with astonishing power and concentration. One, with a Cruse, Bordeaux, label, a disaster at Bud Moon's Yquem tasting in 1988. Thickly coloured; raisiny; intensely sweet with great length in 1995. At the great Yquem tasting in 1998 an attractive amber-gold; overpoweringly sweet nose; immensely sweet, fabulous flavour, incredible finish. Most recently, a superb bottle with short gold capsule and original cork: faultless bouquet, harmonious, glorious evolution in the glass; very rich, excellent flavour, perfect acidity, length and finish. Last tasted at Wilfred Jaeger's remarkable pre-phylloxera Bordeaux tasting, June 2001 ******! M. B.
