A FLORENTINE OAK DOOR AND SURROUND

Details
A FLORENTINE OAK DOOR AND SURROUND
16th century, the arched pediment with central cartouche painted with a coat of arms above an acanthus carved frieze centred by a star, supported by a pair of tapering fluted Ionic pilasters, the door with six panels centred by iron bosses, 380 x 240 cm. (150 x 94 1/2 in.) repairs and replacements
Provenance
The door originally came from the Villa Giramonte, which was built for the Gini family in the late 15th Century, and which still stands within the old city walls of Florence. The Villa then passed through the ownership of many local noblemen including the Verrazzano, Ribaldesi, Migliorini, and Costa families. After a 19th century renovation the door was removed, and remained in storage until 1963 when it was purchased by the director of the David Jones' Art Gallery, the late Robert Haines, to serve as the gallery's entrance on the seventh floor of the Elizabeth Street Sydney Store.
