The sleek lines and abstract geometric forms used by Jean E. Puiforcat (1897-1945) typify the subdued elegance of the Art Deco period. His work was characterized by innovative use of materials and by experimentation with different techniques. He applied his Modernist designs to traditional items such as cutlery and tea sets using simple forms crafted in unusual combinations of materials such as polished silver with rare hardwoods and semiprecious stones.
