Maker's mark of John Mewburn, London 1810, with moulded gadrooned border and leaf cast handles, engraved to the centre with a coat of arms, 79 cm. (31 in.) across handles, 500 gr. (16.0 oz.)

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Graham, for James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose, 1755-1836, Statesman, married firstly Jemima Elizabeth, daughter of the 2nd Earl of Ashburnham, secondly Lady Caroline Maria Montagu, daughter of the 4th Duke of Manchester, 1790. He was MP for Richmond 1780; Great Bedwin 1784-90; a Lord of the Treasury 1783-9; co-paymaster general 1789-91; privy councillor and vice-president of the board of trade, 1789; master of the horse, 1790-5 and 1807-30; Commissioner for India 1791-1803; lord justice general 1795-1836; president of the board of trade 1804-1806; Lord Chamberlain 1821-7 and 1828-30; Knight of the garter 1812; chancellor of Glasgow University 1780-1836
