Lot Essay

Four examples, including the example offered, are known to exist. One is located in each of the following collections: Musée des Arts et Métiers, Musée de l'École de Nancy, and the Funkekaiser Collection, Cologne.
With the exception of the example in the Musée de l'École de Nancy, which has less elaborate body decoration, all appear to bear minor internal cracking suggestive of the difficulties of execution and thus presumably indicative of the small quantity that appear to have been produced. Only two examples, including the present lot, demonstrate elaborate floral marquetry decoration.
