Lot Essay

Picasso created the original drawing as an act of friendship for the Institute of Contemporary Arts, then at 17 Dover Street W1, where one hundred scarves were produced for sale, at the price of five guineas each. According to a 1953 review, "It has taken about two years to produce the scarf in such a state of perfection that Picasso would agree to put his signature to it." (Wilma Moy-Thomas, News Chronicle, 21 June 1953).
The original drawing, which had been sketched into the ICA visitor's book, was also the basis for an edition of 100 prints on paper, and for the cover of the 1951 ICA exhibition of Picasso drawings.
