The Department of Arms and Armor of The Metropolitan Museum of Art opened in 1903 with an exhibition curated by Bashford Dean (1867-1928), who was curator of herpetology and ichthyology at the American Museum of Natural History from 1903 to 1926. The exhibition included many pieces from Dean's own collection. Dean was put in charge of the Department of Arms and Armor in 1903 in an honorary capacity, but was officially appointed curator in 1912, a position he held until he retired in 1927. He gave this blade to the museum in 1914.
