A Set of Inlaid-Lacquer Nanban Saddle (Kura) and Stirrups (Abumi)**
Edo period (17th century)
The saddle and matching stirrups lacquered red worn away in spots to reveal the black lacquer underneath and inlaid in mother-of-pearl with Portuguese traders and missionaries; the saddle decorated on the front and back with three figures dressed in waistcoats and pantaloons unloading cargo, the areas around the figures decorated with ropes and pulleys from the ship's rigging, the edges inlaid in crushed mother-of-pearl; the stirrups decorated on the front with two standing figures, one dressed in a long robe, the other in pantaloons and waistcoat shading his eyes as he looks up, the area above them decorated with ropes and pulleys similar to that on the saddle, the edges and the upright shank with inlaid crushed mother-of-pearl, a pierced cherry blossom below the buckle
