Rectangular with bevelled upper edges and corners and designed in gold and silver takamaki-e, gold, silver and black hiramaki-e and gold foil, kirigane, hirame and nashiji highlights, all against a ground of black lacquer with a gold, red and silver mottled finish, with two phoenixes circling a paulownia tree on the cover, the sides of the box each with a phoenix and paulownia, the edges of the box covered with inlaid crushed eggshell decorated with scrolling vines in gold lacquer, the interior nashiji
