Lot Essay

Wu Zhifan was a late 17th century artist from the Jiading district of Jiangsu. He worked in various materials and was known for the high-relief style of his carving. The style of carving on this brushpot is assured and refined displaying an organic spontaneity. The subject matter, prunus, symbolizes endurance and stability.
