The figure shown standing with body and head swiveled towards the right and right arm held across the body, wearing long layered robes secured by a stiff court belt in back, his long face framed by prominent ears and his tall domed hat decorated on the sides with projecting scrolls

Lot Essay

This figure is particularly unusual in that it appears to depict a secular rather than a religious figure. It also appears to be one of a pair; the other is illustrated on the cover of Chinese Arts Auction Records, 2001 Antiques. The position of the arms and what remains of the hands of these two figures suggest that they may have been holding a staff or standard of some kind. This may also acccount for the pronounced sway to their bodies, and the tilt of their heads.
