The elegant figure shown standing gracefully on a shaped base with her raised left hand and lowered right hand hidden within the full sleeves of her long robes gathered around the hips by a belt, the robes blousoned over the belt and falling in heavy folds to reveal one of her cloud-toed shoes, her full face modelled with delicate features framed by the coif drawn up from the nape to expose her ears and gathered on top into two large topknots, traces of white, black and red pigments

This court lady is dressed in men's clothes, reflecting one of the many couture fashions of Tang courtly taste in the mid 8th century. Compare this figure with the equally large figures illustrated in Xiaoneng Yang (ed.), The Golden Age of Archeology: Celebrated Discoveries from the People's Republic of China, Washington, 1999, pp. 500-5, no. 173.

The result of Oxford Authentication Ltd. thermoluminescence test no. C100t86 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
