Lot Essay

The landscape depicted on the jar is that of the famous pavilion, Teng Wang Ge, in Jiangxi province. Built in 653 by Li Yuanying, the brother of the Emperor Taizong, it was celebrated in the poem, 'Teng Wang Ge Xu' by the renowned Tang poet Wang Wei (701-763). The inscription on the vase is the preface to the poem.
