Well painted with a gathering of scholars in a grouping of pavilions, two shown playing weiqi, several discussing a painting, another practicing calligraphy while others watch, and another playing the qin, with three further scholars and their attendants approaching in the foreground, all below decorative borders on the shoulder and neck

Lot Essay

The scene represents the Four Accomplishments or Four Arts of the Scholar, in which a scholar was to have excelled by the time he passed his Civil Service Examination. These included the qin, chess, painting and calligraphy.
