Musigny, Vieilles Vignes--Vintage 1971
Côte de Nuits, de Vogüé
Level: 2.5cm; bin soiled, nicked and torn label
"When I had this wine a decade ago, I thought it to be an exquisite red burgundy. Another decade of aging has served it well. The color is medium dark garnet with an amber edge. The nose reveals the huge fragrance that only Pinot Noir offers. Aromas of sweet jammy fruit, cedar, damp earth, spices, and underbrush tumble out of the glass. A real headturner from both an aromatic and flavor perspective, this full-bodied wine is crammed with layer upon layer of rich, gamey, smoky, roasted fruit. The finish exhibits thrilling levels of glycerin, alcohol, and sweetness of fruit. Yields must have been remarkably small and the grapes super-ripe to achieve this decadent level of red burgundy. My advice ten years ago was to drink it up! It may last another decade or more, but why wait?" Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #84 (Dec 1992)
