A gray schist relief of an elderly ascetic with a child
Gandhara, 2nd/3rd century
The standing ascetic dressed in diaphanous robes, the gentle face with a long beard, high cheekbones and large eyes looking downward, his hair pulled away from the face and secured with a band surmounted by an ushnisha and backed by a halo, holding a begging bowl in his left hand and his right hand resting on the head of a child who grabs his robe with both hands
