By tradition Rahula is regarded as the historical Buddhas only child. He went on to become a disciple of his father and was included as the tenth of the sixteen Arhats or 'Worthy Ones'. Arhats became the ideal of early Indian Buddhism, with its emphasis on renunciation of the world and extinguishing the passions through discipline and meditation. Sets of Arhats were also to become a popular subject in Chinese painting, the present work exemplifying the fusion of Tibetan and Chinese styles.
