The medallion form of the chair back, with fretted splats radiating from a patera, relates to a set of painted chairs supplied in 1774 by Thomas Chippendale (d.1779) for Paxton House, Berwickshire. See C.Gilbert, The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale, London 1978, vol.II, fig.164.
