This form of fretted-trellis splat was probably invented in the mid-1780's by Sir John Soane (d.1837). The combination of square back, lattice splat and high-set arms, in numerous variations, was popularised in the 1790's by Sheraton in various editions of The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book
