Lot Essay

This unusual example of a playing set decoratively carved with stylised acanthus leaves over a more typical Staunton style design, was probably commissioned for the English market. For a similar example see A Selection from the Gustavus A. Pfeiffer Collection, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1968, plate 92.
