Lot Essay

A similar upright set was exhibited and published in CHESSMEN PRACTICAL AND ORNAMENTAL' Michael Mark, published by Chess Collectors International, May 1986, fig.7. According to Mark this particular design is attributed to Lord John Hay and pre-dates the Staunton pattern by several years.
