This type is often refered to as the 'Charlemangne' set. A similar set is discussed and illustrated in Victor Keats, The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford 1985, page 80, plate 90. Keats' dates his Bavarian example from the early 19th century, and refers to the rearing horse as a typically South German and Austrian trait.
A similar set was also sold in The Ernst Boehlen Chess Collection, Phillips, London, 9 November 1998, lot 57.
