The eldest daughter of Thomas Carey Blyton and Theresa Mary, nee Harrison she was initially groomed to become a musician, however it was her passion for writing that began to emerge and she soon began producing articles and poems for various periodicals. Enid's mother and father did not approve of her literary aspirations and life was made harder for her when her father left home. Enid later travelled to Suffolk to stay with a high school teacher Ida Hunt who recognised in Enid an empathy with children and encouraged her to follow teaching as a career. However her marriage in 1924 to book editor Major Hugh Alexander Pollock DSO helped establish her as a writer enabling her to publish two books that year. In 1926 she undertook the task of editing a new children's magazine the Sunny Stories and in 1938 published her first full length children's adventure book The Secret Island. This led to perhaps her best known works including: The Famous Five; The Secret Seven; the Adventure series; the Mystery series; and the Barney Mystery Books In 1940 she published eleven books including The Children of Cherry Tree Farm and The Secret of Spiggy Holes. In 1942 she married Kenneth Darrell Waters who encouraged her to carry on writing throughout World War II. In 1949 the first of the Noddy book series appeared, illustrated by Van Der Beek these were a phenomenal success and the characters are just as popular today. Enid Blyton died on November 28th 1968. She left a legacy that was to inspire children for generations, her ability to see inside a child's mind enabled her to create a world that encouraged children to read.
