Lot Essay
Rembrandt's self-portraits fall into two distinct groups: formal, and imagined figure types or tronies, of which the present lot is a prime example. Many of these were produced in the early 1630's at a time when Rembrandt shared a studio with Jan Lievens. It gives an interesting insight into his working methods - the composition initially showed him bareheaded, but he subsequently changed his mind by adding the extravagant fur hat. The outline of his rather unruly hair can still be seen within.
