Lot Essay

This etching is one of four made for a book by Manasseh ben Israel, a friend of Rembrandt's, entitled Piedra gloriosa de la estatua de Nebuchadnesar. The slim volume, written in Spanish, is a mystical treatise on the coming of the Messiah. It concerns 'the glorious stone, hewn not by human hand'. The image with the feet of clay and iron that Nebuchadnezar saw in his dream was shattered by the stone, which would ultimately fill the entire earth. Rembrandt makes a reference to this in the globe on the right.
