etching, 1642, with a countermark Initials W K (cf. A. & F., p. 146, W K.a.), a very good, atmospheric impression of the second state (of two), displaying strong contrasts, with margins (slightly uneven), a short repaired tear at the lower left extending just into the subject, a short tear in the right margin, a short repaired tear in the left margin, a small repaired thin spot in the lower margin, otherwise in very good condition.

Lot Essay

At the start of the 1640's Rembrandt developed a taste for nocturnal scenes in both drawing and etching. Here we see a typical Dutch 17th century interior, with only the cardinal's hat, the skull and the lion nearly lost in the shadows identifying the subject.
