Danto, introduction to Honoré de Balzac, The Unknown Masterpiece, New York Review of Books, New York, 2001, p. 11) Rembrandt features extensively as a source of inspiration in Picasso's later years, and particularly in La Suite 347 where the Dutch Master appears as an alter-ego for the aged Spaniard. Picasso's musketeers, reclining nudes and genre scenes are a direct recapitulation of Rembrandt's work; Saskia becomes Jacqueline and in some scenes a dusky tone is spread across the plate reminiscent of Rembrandt's later chiaroscuro works.
