It's a compromise, I suppose. It doesn't really matter. They're two of the people who haunt me.' (from Arthur C. Danto, introduction to Honoré de Balzac, The Unknown Masterpiece, New York Review of Books, New York, 2001, p. 11) Rembrandt features extensively as a source of inspiration in Picasso's later years, and particularly in La Suite 347 where the Dutch Master appears as an alter-ego for the aged Spaniard. Picasso's musketeers, reclining nudes and genre scenes are a direct recapitulation of Rembrandt's work; Saskia becomes Jacqueline and in some scenes a dusky tone is spread across the plate reminiscent of Rembrandt's later chiaroscuro works.
