The present pile rug is visually striking with staggered rows of random red and blue stylised angular floral morifs set against a sandy yellow ground. A related example of similar proportions and equally striking geometric design in a limited number of bold colours is illustrated in John Eskenazi's, Il Tappeto Orientale, Milan, 1983, p.244, no.155. The Avar tribe predominantly wove long runner-like kilims in shades of blue with striking red angular motifs, see lot 60 in this sale, and James D. Burns: The Caucasus - Traditions in Weaving, Tokyo, 1987, pl.43.
