Lot Essay

The knot count is 11H x 10V per cm. sq.

A small number of Koum Kapi rugs were made from the cartoon that has been used here. A rug woven from the same cartoon and with exactly the same colours, signed in at least five places by Zareh Penyamin, was sold in these Rooms, 29 April 1993, lot 325. A further unsigned example was sold here 27 April 1995, lot 495. The present rug retains its colours considerably better than the majority of those of those design. For a discussion of Zareh Penyamin and the other best known weavers in the Koum Kapi district of Istanbul, see: Bensoussan, P.: 'The Masterweavers of Istanbul', in Hali 26, April-June 1985, pp.34-41.
