The Madonna and Child enthroned with saints

The present charming, small, and well-preserved panel belongs within the oeuvre of an artist known as the Master of the Lazaroni Madonna, a fourteenth-century Florentine follower of Nardo di Cione, whose true identity has yet to be determined. Dr. Everett Fahy, who confirmed the attribution of the present painting after seeing it in person, also points out that this work demonstrates the Master's characteristic attempts at one-point perspective. This is most clearly evident in the slope of the tiered throne, which features a decorative tile floor with clearly marked orthogonals. The pattern of costumes and tooling is comparable to that of the Incoronation of the Virgin with Saints in the Acton Collection. The small body of works by the artist was first identified by Richard Offner, who initially dubbed him the Master of the Two Madonnas.
