Lot Essay

Two versions of this composition, with differences in the landscape, exist; one in Kassel (Staatliche Gemäldegalerie, Schloss Wilhelmshohe) and one in the collection of the Marquess of Bute. The present painting is larger than the other two works and appears to be the primary version. Malcolm Waddington dates the present work to 1610-5, and he dates the Kessel painting to the same period (see 'Bologna in Retrospect', Paragone, vol. 14, 1963, p. 64, note 7).
