A provenance label on the reverse of the present indicates that it may have come from Acton Park, near Wrexham. Acton formerly belonged to the Jeffreys family whose most notorious member was 'Hanging' Judge Jeffreys. The house was rebuilt between 1687-95 and then again in 1786-7 when it was acquired by Sir Foster Cunliffe, 3rd Bart.

An alternative attribution to Julius Caesar Ibbetson (1759-1817) has been suggested.
