Lot Essay

A similar though rather smaller binding is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, illustrated in Duncan Haldane, Islamic Bookbindings, London, 1983, pl.160, p.l72. In each there is a deep sunken margin and the central medallion and spandrels are incised and then stamped, tooled and gilded.
