The potters of Iznik played around with the cintamani motif as much as they did with any other design that came their way. Not content just to place staggered rows of groups of three dots above paired tiger stripes, they arranged the tiger stripes into a variety of lattices, thereby forming triangular or square panels. In this dish and just one other the potter has followed the logical conclusion of placing the stripes in a square lattice; he has put the roundels in groups of four rather than three. The other dish which has the same feature, but whose stripes were all in red, was in a Lyonnaise collection formed in the late 19th century and sold in Lyon on 20 March 1990 as lot 12.
