A GOLD OVERLAID CARVED STEEL BUCKLE
SIGNED BY SUFI AHMADALLAH, NORTHERN INDIA OR IRAN, SECOND HALF 18TH CENTURY
The rectangular central panel with slight curve delicately carved with a central rose spray within a delicate floral meander border, the reverse with a bold hook, one side with a cylindrical container enclosing a spindle with ratchet, together with a second similar separate spindle with ratchet and angled loop to one side, the cylinders each with a cartouche inlaid in gold with the commissioning inscription, very slightly rubbed
3½in. (8.7cm.) high

Lot Essay

The inscriptions read: farmayesh-e sarvar gholam-e takhayyol khan , amal-e sufi ahmadullah (Commissioned by Sarvar the slave of Takhayyul Khan. The work of Sufi Ahmadullah)

A very similarly worked small box, attributed to early nineteenth century Qajar Iran, was published by Simon Ray at Spink (The Eye of the Courtier, exhibition catalogue, London, 1999, no.40, p.65).
