A QAJAR POLYCHROME LACQUER PAPIER MACHE MIRROR CASE
PROBABLY ATTRIBUTABLE TO REZA AL-IMAMI, IRAN, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Of rectangular form with separate originally hinged cover, the front and back deep green glitter ground very finely and densely painted with a design of a great variety of flowering sprays and perching birds, each side from a different cartoon, in a border of sang-de-boeuf cartouches containing dense floral sprays divided by rosette roundels between black bands of gold floral meander, the gold glitter interior with a bold iris flower together with narcissi and other floral sprays, in red and black borders of gold floral meander, original engraved silver clasp, hinges replaced and again lacking pins, mirror replaced, very slight chipping to corners, lacquer very well preserved

Lot Essay

The previous publication of this mirror case notes a very similar example signed by Ghulam Riza al-Imami that was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1865, which is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum (inv.922-1869). That mirror case is discussed again as part of the Imami school discussion (Nasser D. Khalili, B.W.Robinson and Tim Stanley, Lacquer of the Islamic Lands, part 2, London, 1997, p.90). This last publication also shows a mirror case by another member of the circle, Zayn al-Abidin which is also very similar to the present example (no.292, pp.91-2).
