IRAN, DATED RABI II AH 1314/SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 1896 AD
Made from adjoined planks of pine, the white ground decorated with green, red, gold and polychrome, with large central medallion completely filled with floral motifs and issuing palmettes and bouquets, enclosed within four spandrels decorated with similar floral motifs and forming a continuous border, slight buckling in parts,some retouching of decoration

Lot Essay

The inscription in the four small panels right in the centre contains Persian verses in praise of the building together with Qur'an Surah Yusif (XII), parts of v.64 (a quotation used for protection) and the date Rabi' II 1314 (AD September-October 1896).
