Lot Essay

Most of Lutf 'Ali's gul-o bulbul designs are executed in a markedly crisp manner, with very sharp outlines and almost pointilliste filling designs which are absent in the present drawing. The style here has echoes of the looser watercolour images painted by Sadeq dating from the end of the eighteenth century. There are however a few works by Lutf 'Ali which clearly follow this earlier looser tradition. One is illustrated in Aydin Aghdashloo, Aqa Lutf'Ali Suratgar, Tehran, 1977, p.158.
