The small nut carved with a broad band of plain panels each containing a cartouche with interlaced arabesques, the panels divided by triple finely carved meandering flowering vine borders, bands of further borders around the circular aperture at top and around the flowerhead on the underside, repaired clean break, secondary hole in shoulder filled

Lot Essay

This was probably originally made as the bowl for a small nargileh; there are a couple of small areas of restoration in the upper border designs that may well have served as the inlet for the mouthpiece pipe. The quality of the carving is very high indeed. The decoration in many of the borders differs from vertical band to band.
