Young In 1948, Anne Mortimer Young, then a young medical student, was given a small nineteenth-century medicine chest. This lay sadly neglected for the next thirty years as Dr Young was fully occupied managing her home and two children and working as a psychiatrist. The chest was rediscovered at a time when family pressures had lessened and led to her collecting medical antiques. This in turn led to a great interest in medical history, particularly the history of domestic medicine and, in 1982, she obtained the Diploma in Medical History of the Society of Apothecaries, London. When she retired from medicine, Dr Young gave talks and wrote for groups ranging from antique clubs to the British Societies for the History of Medicine and Pharmacy. Her collection of domestic medicine chests and other medical related items shows not only her academic background but a 'keen eye' for rare and special pieces. Provenance
The armourial bears the arms of Henry Dawkins of Over Norton Oxfordshire and Standlynch Park Wiltshire and Lady Juliana Colyear who married in 1759. It has been suggested the chest may have been a wedding gift.

In a letter (present in the stand) to Dr Young and dated 1982 the previous owner writes: My husband, Professor George Fegan, is a very keen collector and the Dublin antique dealers had it ready for him to buy ... about twenty years ago. I do not know where it came from but it was from somewhere in Ireland and we were told that the doctor took the box with him in his pony and trap and left the stand at home. We often wondered about 'uncle James' and his powder and also was the opium any good!
