Rolex commenced production of the reference 4768 during the 1940's, incorporating one of the most complicated movements that the company employed, the Valjoux 72C. The design of the case with its faceted teardrop lugs provides a striking contrast to the similarly complicated and sportier reference 6036. Rolex manufactured few examples of the reference 4768 and the present watch provides a further level of interest with the addition of the two-tone dial.

For some further examples of this reference see I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editor, pp. 366-371 and Dowling and Hess, Rolex Wristwatches, The Best of Time, p. 230.
