Lot Essay

The table is based on a design by George Smith, upholsterer to the Prince of Wales (later George IV) as published in his Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, London, 1808, pl. 92.

CALLALY CASTLE

The 15th century building was modernised and expanded upon by a series of later owners including Major Alexander Browne who purchased the estate in 1877. His grandson, also Major Browne, came into the estate in 1925. An outstanding huntsman like his grandfather, the Major was secretary of the Beaufort Hunt in the 1920s and 1930s and served as Chairman of the Percy Fox Hounds (his grandfather founded the West Percy Hunt) from 1496-1976.

This table formed part of the collections sold in Christie's Callaly Castle house sale in 1986.
