Each with an arched back centred by a circular panel with a monogram 'SD' surrounded by panels of carved foliage, the solid seat flanked by Gothic pierced downswept sides, on pierced Gothic ends joined by a chamfered square stretcher, with ink stamp on the underside GT. The richly carved chair with its trestle-stool frame relates to patterns in C. & R. Light's, Cabinet Furniture: Designs and Catalogue of Cabinet and Upholstery Furniture, 1881 (E.T. Joy, The Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, l977 p.260).
Robert Crosby had established this Liverpool firm in the late 1820s.
