LOUIS ROEDERER

Originally founded in 1760 as Dubois, Pere et Fils, the firm became Roederer in 1833, after Louis inherited the business from his uncle. The Cristal luxury cuvee was originally made to order for Tsar Alexander II and was of a sweeter style actually made in crystal bottles. The firm has impressive vineyard holdings in Ay, Hautevillers, Cumieres, Louvois, Verzey, Verzenay, Vertus, Avize, Chouilly and Le Mesnil. These grand crus are vinified separately and small steel vats and then aged in large oak barrels which gives the house its distinctive vanilla, nutty richness. Cristal is generally half Pinot Noir and half Chardonnay, with some vintages containing slightly more Pinot.
