PAUL BLANCK
A vaunted and storied domaine with a pleasant seat in sleepy little Kientzheim, the story begins in 1610 when Hans Blanck, originally from Austria, acquired his first vines in Alsace. In 1927, Paul Blanck was instrumental in the pilot work to setup the Schlossberg vineyard as a potential Grand Cru, which came to fruition in 1975 when the Grand Cru system was finally established in Alsace with Schlossberg recognized as the first Grand Cru. Schlossberg is a dramatically steep, terraced vineyard where the confluence of the Kaysersberg migmatites and the Thannenkirch granite conspire to produce a fertile, sandy-clay mix strewn with a myriad of minerals: potassium, magnesium, fluorine and phosphorus. Schlossberg wines possess finesse and great aromatic complexity showing ripe citrus fruit with flint notes as well as a curiously pleasant bitterness.
