The Treasure of Pietrossa was discovered by accident in a limestone quarry in 1837 on the Wallachian plain in Romania, an area rich in archaeological finds from Bronze Age to Gothic. The cache consisted of 22 pieces, including eagle-headed fibulae, a 12 sided cup, necklaces and vessels, of which 12 survive. The hoard was sent to Russia for safekeeping in 1916, being returned 40 years later.
