Lot Essay

The ancient glass collection of Julien Gréau consisted of some 5000 pieces. After his death in 1895, the majority of the glass was purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan, who oversaw the publication of this catalogue, with the text by Wilhelm Froehner. The collection was then bequeathed to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, where it forms the major basis of its glass collection.
