Cornelis Vreedenburgh was commissioned in the early 1930s to visit the Holy Land and paint its landscapes. The commission was given to him by the Bijbel Kiosk Vereniging. The Bijbel Kiosk was founded in 1928 in order to promote biblical and evangelical literature in the Netherlands, concentrating its efforts on public places, children's bibles and bibles for the illiterate. It was therefore of great importance that the works of art commissioned would be graphic, colourful and interesting such as the present lot.
