Southward: Peter Treveris, 1526]. 2° (281 x 188mm). 317 woodcut illustrations (including repeats) in the text (lacks 62 leaves, worming in 12 leaves from L3 tapering to a single wormhole as far as R3 with some damage to text, some stains). 19th-century blindstamped calf (rebacked, corners rubbed). Provenance: a few lengthy marginalia in English and Latin in a later 16th-century hand -- James Franck Bright (armorial bookplate).
FIRST EDITION of the first illustrated English herbal. The woodcuts are copies of the cuts used in Dutch sixteenth-century vernacular editions of the Herbarius (first published in 1511) which in turn derive from those in the German Gart der Desundheit. Treveris also used the woodcuts in his two editions of Hieronymus von Braunschweig's Vertuose Boke of Distyllacyon. STC 13176; Nissen BBI 2296; Henrey 168. Sold not subject to return.
